June has arrived, and you can feel it, can’t you?
There’s a certain shift that happens this time of year. The pace softens, the days stretch a little longer, and suddenly everything feels just a bit lighter. As the school year winds down, we’re not just looking ahead to summer anymore, we’re stepping fully into it. This isn’t May’s anticipation. This is June’s invitation. Can I stop hiding in the closet with the candy now? This is our invitation to slow down and to let our kids be exactly what they are at their core: curious, joyful, messy, free.
I find myself noticing the little things more this time of year. The way sneakers get scuffed within minutes of being new because they’re being used exactly as they should be. There’s so much running, chasing, and exploring going on. My kids love the excitement of pulling out goggles for the first cannonball of the season. The way a backpack, once filled with homework and folders, suddenly becomes a container for shells, sticks, and whatever “treasure” the day brings home. And hopefully they find a twenty dollar bill somewhere that they can put right in their piggy banks or treat everyone to ice cream.
Summer learning looks different, and honestly, it might be the most meaningful kind. It’s the science of building the perfect sandcastle before the tide comes in. The teamwork of a pickup game. The confidence that comes from trying something new at camp. It’s learning that doesn’t feel like learning at all. This is the fleeting magic of it. At JCC Brooklyn, this is one of our favorite times of year. There’s an energy that’s hard to describe but easy to feel. We all feel lighter, and more aligned. We watch kids settle into themselves in new ways. We see friendships form, confidence grow, and joy show up in its purest form. It’s not about structure or schedules, it’s about experience. And maybe just as importantly, this season is for us, too.
As parents, we carry so much throughout the year. The logistics, the routines, the constant motion. June gently reminds us that we’re allowed to loosen our grip a little. To say yes to the extra ice coffee of the day (I am on my third right now). To stay out a bit later. To laugh more, plan a little less, and be present in ways that are harder to access during the busier months. There’s something really grounding about watching our kids just be and realizing we can do a bit of that ourselves.
So here’s to June! To sandy feet and wet towels! To long days and even longer memories!
To letting go, just a little, and embracing what this season offers. Let’s step into summer with open hearts. I am fully ready for the mess, the magic, the laughter, and all the small, beautiful moments in between. Before we know it, our kids will be all grown up, but for now, it’s summer. It’s summer. It’s. Summer.
