A Gift of the Spirit

Camp offers space. There is space to explore, to try something new without pressure, to be a little braver than they were the day before. It’s where my kids step into new versions of themselves. Each summer, I watch them come home a little more confident, a little more independent, and a lot more sure of who they are. They absolutely love it! It’s where they discover new interests. Whether it’s a sport they didn’t know they’d enjoy, a creative activity that suddenly clicks, or even just the confidence to join in when something feels unfamiliar, they’re explorers of the self. They spend their days moving their bodies, soaking up the sunshine, laughing with friends, and building memories that carry them well beyond August.
I think that as parents we begin to understand that growth isn’t just physical, it’s emotional and social, too. Our children are learning how to navigate friendships, take small risks, solve problems, and celebrate their own accomplishments. I feel that camp structured in all the right ways, because within camp structure – as opposed to school structure – there is a freedom that feels expansive and joyful. As a parent, there’s also something incredibly grounding about knowing my kids are in a place where they’re not only safe, but truly thriving. Summer camp isn’t just about filling the days, it’s about giving our children the opportunity to grow in ways that aren’t always possible during the school year. It’s an investment in their confidence, their independence, and their happiness.
So, as we count down the final weeks of school, I find myself looking forward to more than just a break from the routine. I’m excited to watch my three campers step into another summer filled with growth, discovery, and joy. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: summer at JCC Brooklyn isn’t just a season, it’s where some of the most meaningful moments of childhood happen. And time flies like summer, so this is a true gift of the spirit.
